After being discouraged by a school guidance counselor concerning her desire to study medicine, Karen Young continued her quest and received her first degree in medicine in Jamaica. When she migrated to the U.S., she was told her degree was lacking and had to study two more years before obtaining her degree. Now, Dr. Young, an ophthalmologist, is one of the owners of Capital Eye Consultants in Tallahassee where she specializes in Glaucoma prevention and treatment. She is on a quest to get more young African Americans interested in Ophthalmology and has several young interns training in her office.
